Te Tai O Marokura Health and Social Service is deeply rooted in the Ngāti Kurii community, with a rich cultural heritage and a strong commitment to the well-being of whānau, hapū, and iwi. Our name, derived from our Purakau our migration, signifies the pride we have in our identity and whakapapa.
As the most northern Wharetutu of Ngāi Tahu, our Takiwa (cultural territory) extends from Te Pari Nui O Whiti in the north to the Hurunui River in the south and inland to the great divide in the west. Ngāti Kuri is the Iwi authority in our Takiwa, and Te Rūnanga o Kaikoura serves as the operating authority. Takahanga is our Papatipu Marae, a place where we gather and connect.
Te Rūnanga o Kaikoura has mandated Te Tai O Marokura since the mid-1900s to deliver health and social services to whānau, hapū, iwi, and all those residing in or visiting our shores. Marokura, a Demi god, plays a significant role in our cultural narrative, beautifying the land and providing sustenance to future generations. Our service reflects Marokura's works, addressing the needs of our people, visitors, and environment.
Te Tai O Marokura originated in the late 1970s as a marae-based health and social service, pioneered by our founder member Miriama Kahu. Over the years, we have grown to meet the evolving needs of our community. Under the guidance of our upoko Wiremu Solomon, Te Tai O Marokura was mandated to deliver health and social services to the Ngāti Kuri Takiwa in the mid to late 90s, a mandate that still stands today.
Our service strives to restore the relationships between Atua (gods), whenua (land), moana (ocean), and Tangata (people), enhancing whanaungatanga and cultural identity within the whānau, hapū, iwi, and wider communities. As the mondated Kaupapa Māori Health & Social Service Provider in Kaikoura and its surrounding districts, we aim to empower Ngāti Kurii to thrive.
Our vision is for "Ngāti Kurii to be proud and thriving." When Ngāti Kurii flourishes, so does our entire community. Our mission is to "Whakamana Ngāti Kurii whānau and hapū," empowering them through a wide range of health and social services. We are dedicated to achieving tino rangatiratanga, manaakitanga, and whakawhanaungatanga with our community at all levels.
